Сосед съезжает, но душе моей не легче, –

По всем углам витает грустный дух.

Съезжает с дома мой сосед – краснодеревщик,

Прощальных слов не выговорить вслух.

В любой доске он тонко чуял пол прекрасный

И кол осиновый умел так заточить,

Что тот казался – древесиной красной,

И он искал, кому его всучить.

Табачным дымом он, смолой и политурой

Пропитан был от пяток до бровей.

Я заказал ему одну скамейку сдуру –

Чтоб, если – в суд, то ехать со своей.

Он так хотел вложить в нее тепла и лоска,

Но в доски въелась биография моя,

И мне, взамен, строгнулась лавкой жесткой

Чужой работы черная скамья.

Сосед съезжает нынче в ночь как спозаранок,

Метет опилок пыльную труху.

Оставь, оставь ты мне на память свой рубанок –

Строгать сучки и жизни шелуху.

Сосед съезжает, будто по квартирной сменке, –

Зевнула дверь и в доме слышно стало то,

Как тикают часы на голой стенке –

Как будто долбит в темя долото.

На рубль, на копеечку,

Строгни мне напоследок новодел.

иметь свою скамеечку –

Ведь, на казенной я уже сидел.
