
Yma Sumac (real name Zoila Augusto Chavari del Castillo) was a Peruvian-American singer, born on September 13, 1922, in Peru. She possessed a unique vocal range of nearly five octaves, making her one of the most outstanding performers of Latin American music. Her stage name means "Ah, what beauty!" in Quechua. Yma Sumac recorded for Capitol Records and gained worldwide fame thanks to the album "Voice of the Xtabay" Her work included such hits as "Chuncho" and "Tumpa" Yma Sumac made a significant contribution to the popularization of Latin American music on the international stage.
