
Tony Allen Allen was a Nigerian-French drummer, composer, and songwriter born on July 20, 1940. He is considered one of the founders of the Afrobeat genre. From 1968 to 1979, Tony Allen was the drummer and musical director for Fela Kuti Africa '70 . Fela Kuti once stated that "without Tony Allen there would be no Afrobeat." After leaving the band, he continued a successful solo career, releasing numerous albums and collaborating with artists such as Damon Albarn . His contribution to Afrobeat and jazz music remains unrivaled. Tony Allen died on April 30, 2020, in Paris.
