The Modern Lovers were an American rock band formed in 1970 in Massachusetts. Known for their influential role in the development of proto-punk, the group existed for only four years, disbanding in 1974. Their recordings bridged the gap between Velvet Underground and punk rock, leaving a lasting legacy. In 1976, Jonathan Richman, a member of the original lineup, reformed the band under the name Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, releasing eight albums that diverged significantly from the original group's style. The Modern Lovers remain a cornerstone in the history of rock music for their pioneering sound.
