
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915–1973) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist born in the United States. She worked in the gospel, blues, and pop genres. In the 1930s and 1940s Sister Rosetta Tharpe became the first true gospel star, combining spiritual lyrics with rhythmic accompaniment. Her work had a significant influence on the development of rock and roll, for which she is called the "godmother" of the genre.
