Screamin' Jay Hawkins (born July 18, 1929, USA) was an African-American singer and songwriter working in the rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and rhythm and blues genres. His powerful, operatic vocals and eccentric performance style made him one of the most colorful figures of the 1950s. He is best known for the song "I Put a Spell on You" which has become a classic and has been covered by numerous artists. Screamin' Jay Hawkins is considered a forefather of shock rock due to his theatrical style, grotesque aesthetic, and dark humor, significantly influencing the development of rock and pop music.
