Orchestra Baobab is a Senegalese musical group founded in 1970. The band blends African, Latin American, and Caribbean musical styles. The original lineup, formed by saxophonist Baro N'Diaye , included seven musicians, three of whom had previously played in Star Band , a well-known Dakar group. Cuban music had a significant influence on their work, while African roots were evident through the vocals of Laye M'Boup , who performed Wolof folk songs. The group quickly gained popularity in Dakar, and lineup changes added new elements, such as Mandinka music. Orchestra Baobab made a significant contribution to the development of the African music scene.
