Obituary is an American death metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed in 1984. The band was formed by John Tardy, his brother Donald Tardy, and Trevor Peres. The band was originally named Executioner but later changed it to Xecutioner to avoid confusion with another band. Before the release of their debut album in 1989, the name was changed to Obituary . The band is considered one of the founders of the death metal genre, releasing such landmark albums as "Slowly We Rot" and "Cause of Death" . Their contributions to the genre have made them cult figures in the metal community.
