NWA is an American hip-hop group from Compton, California, formed in 1986. The group is considered one of the founders of the gangsta rap subgenre. The group lasted until 1991, releasing the iconic album Straight Outta Compton , which became revolutionary for the genre thanks to its frank lyrics and its exploration of pressing social issues. Despite being banned from radio stations and touring, NWA sold approximately 30 million copies of their albums in the US alone. Their work had a huge influence on the development of hip-hop and formed the foundation for many subsequent artists in the genre.
