
Memphis Minnie (real name Lizzie Douglas ) was an American blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter born in 1897 in the United States. She became one of the few women in the blues who critics ranked alongside the leading performers of the 1930s and 1940s. Her recording career spanned forty years, a unique achievement for women in show business in the first half of the 20th century. Among her famous songs are "When the Levee Breaks" and "Me and My Chauffeur Blues" Memphis Minnie made a significant contribution to the development of blues, inspiring many subsequent generations of musicians.
