Level 42 is a British band formed in 1979 on the Isle of Wight, England. Known for their initial jazz-funk fusion style influenced by Stanley Clarke, they later transitioned to pop-rock with elements of funk, jazz, and R&B. Between 1980 and 1994, Level 42 had 30 singles chart in the UK Singles Chart, with their highest success being "Lessons in Love". Out of their 14 albums that entered the UK Album Charts, "Running in the Family" and "Staring at the Sun" peaked at number 2. The band is particularly noted for the instrumental prowess of its members, especially Mark King, who developed a distinctive slap-bass technique. Level 42 made a significant impact on the evolution of jazz-funk and pop-rock.
