Kurt Masur was a distinguished German conductor born in 1927 in Brzeg, Poland (then Germany). He specialized in world classical music and opera. Masur served as music director of renowned orchestras such as New York Philharmonic , Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, and London Philharmonic Orchestra . His interpretations of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler received worldwide acclaim. His awards included Commander of the Legion of Honour in France.
