Gary Holt is an American guitarist from the San Francisco Bay Area, born in 1964. He is called the "godfather" of thrash metal due to his contributions to the genre. Holt is the guitarist, leader, and primary songwriter for Exodus , one of the key thrash metal bands. From 2011 to 2019, he was also a member of Slayer , replacing Jeff Hanneman first temporarily and then permanently after his death in 2013. Gary Holt made a significant contribution to the formation of thrash metal, remaining one of its most influential figures.
