Known for his work in R&B, jazz, and rock, he gained prominence as a session musician with Motown's legendary Funk Brothers. Coffey's innovative use of the wah-wah pedal and fuzz effects helped shape the sound of hits like "Cloud Nine" by The Temptations. His solo career peaked with the instrumental hit "Scorpio", which became a Top 10 single in 1971.
