He began his music career after spending much of his youth in reform schools and prisons, initially gaining recognition as a street performer in Nashville. His most notable songs include "You Never Even Called Me by My Name", "Longhaired Redneck", "The Ride", "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile", and "She Used to Love Me a Lot".
