
Calypso Rose is a Trinidadian calypso singer, born on April 27, 1940. She began writing songs at the age of 13 and, over the course of her career, has composed over 1,000 songs and released over 20 albums. Known as the "Mother of Calypso," Calypso Rose was the genre's first female star. Her lyrics often address social issues such as racism and sexism. Due to her influence Calypso King competition was renamed Calypso Monarch . In addition to music, she is actively involved in social activism and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Calypso Rose has made a significant contribution to the development of the calypso genre.
