Bonga (real name Жозе Аделину Барсело де Карвалью , also known as Bonga Kwenda ) is an Angolan singer, composer, and lyricist, born September 5, 1942. A performer of semba and other genres of Angolan popular music, he has earned the unofficial title of "ambassador of Angolan music." His stage name translates as "one who sees and moves ahead, constantly moving." Bonga performs songs in Portuguese, Kimbundu, Umbundu, and Luanda slang. Among his famous compositions are works that have become emblematic of Angolan musical culture. His contribution to African music has made him a cult figure in Angola and beyond.
