Big Mama Thornton was an American singer and songwriter, born on December 11, 1926, in the United States. She performed blues, rhythm and blues, and jazz. Big Mama Thornton is best known for her hit "Hound Dog" which topped the Billboard R&B charts for seven weeks in 1953 and sold nearly two million copies. However, her version of the song was virtually forgotten after Elvis Presley recorded it in 1955. Big Mama Thornton made a significant contribution to the development of blues and rhythm and blues, inspiring many subsequent artists. She died on July 25, 1984.
