She saw a shadow

Slip away

Black to blacker shrinking

In the light of day

Heading for cover

Or a place to lay

Invisible

She knowns what folks say

But she has lived here her whole life

She sees what she sees

Shy eyes

Starling through the trees

Old man drifting

Down the road

Maybe she’ll go help him

With his heavy load

But there’s nobody there

What was warm is cold

Spirited into the air

So she’s told

And she has lived here her whole life

She knows what she knows

Angel man

In ancient clothes

Walk out in the steely mountain freeze

Sweet scent of tobacco greets her on the breeze

Solitary

But not on her own

The emty road is crowded

Andshe’s alone

While souls in the shadows

Move through the white pine stand

From the old foundation

To the height of land

She saw a meteor

Slip away

Bright to brighter

Burning in the great display

Heading for glory

Or a place to lay

The last reverberation

Of the final day

Walk out in the steely mountain freeze

Old man in the shadows whistling through the leaves

Solitary
