Я пришёл домой в разгар заката,

В петушиный ярый красный час,

Словно лавра древняя стала хата,

Без дверей и окон звонный Спас.

И спросила голосом орлицы —

Лики видишь ты иль просто лица,

Дерево иль чёрное дупло,

Холодно тебе или тепло.

Хата с дымарём и печкой тусклой

Показалась женщиной мне грустной.

Милою, забытою давно.

Приоткрыла ставеньку, окно,

И оттуда вдруг дымком пахнуло,

Милое, забытое минуло,

Над трубою горлицей дымок,

Ты вернулся, маленький сынок.

А закат горел в окне, икона,

Старый сад гудел в колокола,

И храпели яблони, как кони,

Закусив сухие удила.

Я стоял пред хатою забытый,

Где родился много лет тому,

День звенел, конь в сердце бил копытом,

Я домой вернулся ни к кому…
