«On brick land, above the frying pan public house, I removed my boots to make

love.

As the coins from my pocket hit the untreated wooden floorboards,

a large number of roaches scurried from beneath the single mattress,

the only piece of furniture in an otherwise empty room.

With her back to me, almost embarrassed, she placed the coins into a once white,

greasy handkerchief.

She turned round;

I could smell gin, as she rested her

head on my shoulder.

She put her lips to my ear, and then she whispered:»
