Zieht leis aus dem Schlamm der Krake die Krallen

Belächelt der protzigen Rungholter Wahn

Das Meer wie schlafender Stahl, der geschliffen

Plötzlich wie Ruf eines Raubtiers in Banden:

Das Scheusal wälzte sich, atmete tief

Und schloß die Augen wieder und schlief

Kommen wie rasende Rosse geflogen

Schwamm andern Tags der stumme Fisch

From Brazil shines to Norway's reefs

The sea like sleeping steel being sharpened

Suddenly like call of a predator in gangs:

The beast rolled, breathing deeply

And closed my eyes again and slept

And rushing, black, long-maned waves

Come flying like mad steeds

Where yesterday there was still noise and a merry table

Another day the dumb fish swam

Today I drove over Rungholt
