Am Abend bist du wieder mal

Da, wo alle Welt sich trifft

Eine, die du nicht kennst, sitzt neben dir

Und du rauchst und trinkst und sprichst mit ihr

Und weil du’s bei jeder probieren musst

Denkst du, dass du das Richtige tust

Als du fragst, ob sie mit dir kommen will

Und sie sagt nicht ja, sie nickt nur still

Jetzt liegt sie bei dir, du betrachtest sie

Und während du nach Fehlern suchst

Denkst du, dass sie’s mit Allen macht

Und das stört dich schon nach dieser Nacht!

Doch du redest so, bevor sie geht

Als sei es dir gleich, ob ihr euch wiederseht

Auch sie verbirgt, was sie denkt vor dir

Schreibt nur etwas auf und geht aus der Tür

Am selben Abend stehst du doch

Halb betrunken vor ihrem Haus

Sie öffnet, bittet dich herein

Und fast bist du enttäuscht — sie ist allein

Du sagst einen Gruß, achtest auf ihr Gesicht

Doch, was sie denkt, siehst du wieder nicht!

Und du nimmst dir vor, nie mehr zu ihr zu geh’n

Weil du Angst hast, dabei durchzudreh’n

Zwei, drei Tage hältst du’s aus

Dann liegst du wieder neben ihr

So machst du weiter, wochenlang

Verrätst dich nicht und fühlst dich krank

Und du meinst, wenn du sagst: «Du bist blass mein Kind!»

Die Nächte, wenn Andere bei ihr sind

Und wieder prüfst du ihr Gesicht —

Vielleicht weint sie nachts, sie sagt es nicht!

Und dann, du hast es längst gewusst

Triffst du den Anderen bei ihr

Jetzt spürst du zwischen Schmerz und Wut

Recht zu haben — wie weh das tut!

Du nimmst dich zusammen, lächelst sogar

Du redest, aber du denkst nicht klar!

Und du gehst, als du glaubst, dass du schreien musst —

Vielleicht hat sie gewollt, dass du es tust!

Jetzt bist du abends wieder mal

Da wo alle Welt sich trifft

Für dich der Ort, wohin du passt

Seit du dich wieder gefangen hast

Und es wird dir gelingen, nie mehr schwach zu sein

Stets auf der Hut und hart wie Stein!

Und neben dir sitzt wieder so ein Kind —

Eins von denen, die noch kaputtzumachen sind

In the evening you are again

Where everyone meets

One you don't know is sitting next to you

And you smoke and drink and talk to her

And because you have to try it on everyone

Do you think you're doing the right thing?

When you ask if she wants to come with you

And she doesn't say yes, she just nods silently

Now she is with you, you look at her

And while you look for mistakes

Do you think she does it with everyone?

And that bothers you after tonight!

But you talk like that before she leaves

As if you don't care if you meet again

She also hides what she thinks from you

Just write something down and walk out the door

The same evening you are standing

Half drunk in front of her house

She opens and invites you in

And you're almost disappointed — she's alone

You say a greeting, pay attention to her face

But you can't see what she's thinking!

And you resolve never to go to her again

Because you're afraid of going crazy

You can hold out for two or three days

Then you lie next to her again

You carry on like this for weeks

Don't betray yourself and feel sick

And you mean when you say: "You're pale, my child!"

The nights when others are with her

And again you examine her face —

Maybe she cries at night, she doesn't say it!

And then, you've known it for a long time

Do you meet the other at her

Now you feel between pain and anger

To be right — how painful it is!

You pull yourself together, even smile

You talk but you don't think clearly!

And you leave when you think you need to scream—

Maybe she wanted you to do it!

Now you're in the evening again

Where the world meets

For you the place where you fit

Since you caught yourself again

And you will succeed in never being weak again

Always on guard and hard as stone!

And there is another child sitting next to you —

One of those yet to be broken
